Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World

Collections

The Joukowsky Institute possesses a permanent collection of ancient artifacts acquired over the course of the three decades of existence of the Center for Old World Archaeology and Art, which the Institute replaced. These artifacts are an important resource for hands-on teaching and are incorporated into coursework, undergraduate and graduate student projects and exhibits, and outreach activities.

Rhode Island Hall was built with exhibits in mind. The building includes display areas on all floors and the Institute is proud to host a constantly changing variety of exhibits. In addition to physical exhibits, we have started producing more virtual content. These digital exhibits complement and expand on our substantial collection of multimedia projects and slideshow galleries.

The Joukowsky Institute's collection of approximately 10,000 ancient coins and more than 2,000 other objects can be accessed by appointment, or during one of the Institute's frequent View the Vault events, in which the community is invited to explore the objects in storage with the guidance of experienced docents. Many of the artifacts are also rotated in and out of the various exhibits showcased throughout Rhode Island Hall and in other locations around campus.

The Joukowsky Institute is not actively acquiring new objects for its collections. Those who might be interested in donating archaeological artifacts, art, or other materials are encouraged to contact Brown University's Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology.
