Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World

Undergraduate

The undergraduate concentration in Archaeology and the Ancient World provides students with the opportunity to explore the multi-faceted discipline of archaeology while examining the critical early civilizations of the so-called “Old World” — that is, the complex societies of the Mediterranean (not least Greece and Rome), Egypt, and the ancient Near East.

The concentration, with its three tracks and its encouragement of fieldwork and independent research, is designed to allow students flexibility in structuring their own path through this remarkably diverse and highly engaging field of study.

Students interested in learning more about concentrating in Archaeology and the Ancient World should talk with the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

The JIAAW also supports undergraduate students in allied concentrations, including Anthropology (Archaeology and Biological Anthropology tracks), Egyptology and AssyriologyClassics, and History of Art and Architecture. Many of our concentrators carry second concentrations through those programs.

Declaring A Concentration

We would recommend that all students who are considering concentrating in Archaeology and the Ancient World meet with Director of Undergraduate Studies or the Joukowsky Institute's Assistant Director.

New concentrators should declare their concentration by filling out the online declaration form in ASK. The form can be accessed via the "Concentrations" tab at ask.brown.edu. All students declare a concentration no later than the middle of their fourth semester, before pre-registering for semester five (usually Spring semester of sophomore year).
