Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World

Graduate

The Joukowsky Institute’s graduate programs in Archaeology and the Ancient World combine a flexible interdisciplinary atmosphere with a curricular structure that prepares students for professional careers in teaching, museum studies, government and nonprofit organizations, or other relevant occupations.

Programs

The Joukowsky Institute’s Ph.D. in Archaeology and the Ancient World is designed to provide graduates with an effective foundation in the archaeology, art, and history of the Mediterranean and Near Eastern worlds, as well as with necessary training in ancient and modern languages and in other practical skills, while constantly encouraging the development of independent and original topics for dissertation research.
The Graduate Certificate in Archaeology of the Ancient World offers graduate students already enrolled in Ph.D. programs at Brown University the opportunity to acquire and to consolidate a foundational background in archaeology of the Mediterranean or Near East that may enhance the students' experiences in their primary, degree-granting graduate program.
The basic financial support package for graduates in the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology is provided by the Graduate School through a variety of means over the course of a student’s career at Brown University.

Professional Skills and Networks

The Joukowsky Institute organizes seminars at a minimum of twice each semester to offer our doctoral students training in topics of particular interest, from publishing opportunities, to grant seeking, to organizing a fieldwork season or a conference session. Brown University's Program in Early Cultures also organizes regular discussions for graduate students in pre-modern history, society, or culture, to cultivate connections among students in different disciplines across the University and to offer advice and training on topics of shared professional concern.

Brown University's Graduate School offers a wide and growing range of avenues for professional development, from funding for travel or conferences to apprenticeship programs in university administration.

Training in Pedagogy

Joukowsky Institute graduate students in Archaeology and the Ancient World have also greatly benefited from participating in the various seminars offered through the Harriet W. Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning. Several different forms of training and support are offered, and teaching certificates can be earned from the Sheridan Center.

Mentorship

The Archaeology Department Undergraduate Group has also organized a mentoring partnership, pairing undergraduate students with graduate mentors. To find out more about this program, contact the Dig DUG leaders at DigDUG@brown.edu.
