Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World

The Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World (JIAAW) is dedicated to the academic study and public promotion of archaeology and the ancient world. We are especially focused on the archaeology and art of the ancient Mediterranean, Egypt, and Near East.

The Joukowsky Institute and Brown University, more broadly, presently sponsor archaeological field projects in Egypt, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Mexico, Sardinia, Turkey, and in Providence, Rhode Island. Brown graduate students and undergraduates are welcome to apply to participate in these endeavors, or to explore other fieldwork opportunities.

Students interested in archaeology are strongly encouraged to think about exploring fieldwork opportunities, either by participating in a project led by a Brown University faculty member or by finding other projects that focus on regions or topics of particular interest to the students.

The Joukowsky Fieldwork Fund was established in memory of Professor Martha Sharp Joukowsky and Chancellor Artemis A.W. Joukowsky for their many contributions to Brown University and the field of archaeology. The fund was created by the generous support of former students, colleagues, and family and ensures that all undergraduate students at Brown have the opportunity to conduct research in field archaeology.
