Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World

About Our Wreath

The Joukowsky Institute’s brand image is an ornamental wreath in low relief, found during the long-running Brown excavations at Petra in Jordan: a reused architectural element, casually built — upside down — into a much later Byzantine wall.

The wreath's image reminds the Joukowsky Institute's community of the need always to consider connections and relationships across the ancient world, to study things in context, and to remain open to the unexpectedness of the archaeological record.

The wreath itself is now displayed at the East entrance of Rhode Island Hall.
