The administration of Brown University, in consultation with Brown's Graduate School, has instructed doctoral programs in the humanities and social sciences to temporarily suspend graduate admissions. The Joukowsky Institute thus regrets to announce that applications for the doctoral program in Archaeology and the Ancient World cannot be accepted for the coming academic year.

The September 28th issue of the Brown Daily Herald features an article on the recent town hall discussion organized by Decolonization at Brown (DAB), the Public Art Committee, and the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World.

Joukowsky Institute faculty are currently planning to offer all our courses in-person (as hybrid classes, with online elements), though plans may change in the coming month.

Lauren Yapp, Postdoctoral Fellow in International Humanities​ with Brown University's Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology, the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, and the Cogut Institute for the Humanities, has been appointed as an Instructor in the Center for Asian Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Archaeology and the Ancient World concentrator and Engaged Scholar Kelley Tackett has been awarded a Fulbright fellowship for 2020-2021.

The Fall 2019/Winter 2020 issue of Inventory, the newsletter of Brown University’s Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World, is now available online. 

The article in Antiquity, published December 10, 2019, describes a new survey program undertaken by the project team, focused on the Batn el-Hagar in Sudan. The Batn el-Hagar has traditionally been characterized as sparsely occupied during the Middle Kingdom Period, with most activity limited to the Egyptian fortresses along the Second Cataract, but the project's work offers evidence for a more richly occupied landscape.

IAAW's Professor Felipe Rojas is featured in the National Geographic series, "Lost Cities With Albert Lin".

In this volume, Rojas examines how the inhabitants of Roman Anatolia interacted with the physical traces of earlier civilizations in their midst.

The volume explores specifically the time frame from the fall of the Roman empire to the Medieval period.

State of the Field 2020: Archaeology of the Levant will be dedicated to addressing the unique aspects of the Levant through a series of invited papers and presentations, aimed to foster constructive discussion of current and future directions for archaeology in the region.
